The Raid: Redemption

The Raid: Redemption or Serbuan Maut is an Indonesian martial arts action film directed by Gareth Evans and starring Iko Uwais which is set for a 2012 release. This is the second collaboration of Evans and Uwais after their first action film, Merantau released in 2009. Both films showcase the traditional Indonesian martial art Pencak Silat. The fight choreographers of The Raid are Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian who also worked on Merantau. The US release of the film features music by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park and Joseph Trapanese.

Synopsis

Deep in the heart of Jakarta's slums lies an impenetrable derelict apartment building which became a safe house for the world's most dangerous killers and gangsters. The rundown apartment block has been considered untouchable to even the bravest of police. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite team is tasked with raiding the building in order to take down the notorious drug lord who runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, the building's lights are cut off and all exits are blocked. Stranded on the 6th floor with no way out, the unit must fight their way through the city's worst criminals to survive their mission.

Reception

Early reviews for The Raid: Redemption have been highly positive. Based on 16 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a 94% fresh rating, and an average score of 8.5/10.

US remake

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired the distribution rights of the film for the US and has tasked Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park and Joseph Trapanese to create a new score. The distribution rights for other territories were also sold, including Alliance (Canada), Momentum (United Kingdom), Madman (Australia), SND (France), Kadokawa (Japan), Koch (Germany), HGC (China), and Calinos (Turkey). Deals have also been made with distributors from Russia, Scandinavia, Benelux, Iceland, Italy, Latin America, Korea and India during the film screening at the TIFF.

A few months after Sony acquired the film's North American distribution rights, it was announced by Hollywood Reporter that its subsidiary company, Screen Gems, is in negotiations to produce a Hollywood remake. The remake will not be directed by Gareth Evans as he is preparing another film with Iko Uwais, called Berandal, scheduled for filming in February 2012.

In January 2010 Ti West was named as the director of the MPI/Dark Sky project. Kelly McGillis, Sara Paxton and Pat Healy signed on in May 2010. The film is produced by Derek Curl, Peter Phok, Ti West and Larry Fessenden for Dark Sky Films in partnership with Glass Eye Pix. It was shot in Torrington, Connecticut. West shot several scenes in the actual Torrington, Connecticut Yankee Pedlar Inn.

Soundtrack

The score is composed by American musician Jeff Grace.

Release

Dark Sky Films set for a limited theatrical release on February 3, 2012. Ti West narrated and presented his film on the "Get Lit" Winter Party on 22 December 2010 in The Purple Lounge at The Standard Hotel on the Sunset Strip, Hollywood, California.

Critical reception

The Innkeepers has received generally good reviews from critics before its release. As of 25 January 2012 the film has a 81% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 21 reviews counted, though no official consensus has been reached yet. David Harley of horror movie review site Bloody Disgusting gave the film three skulls out of five saying that "once the tone shifts from light-hearted comedy to balls-to-the-wall horror, it makes the two halves feel like separate films" and that The Innkeepers is "just kind of disappointing". Others gave the film more favorable reviews, with Life After Undeath giving the film 8 out of 10 and saying that "it is a slow burn with a wicked punch and it is creepier than that one eyed whore with the deep voice you always avoid on your way back from the 'massage' parlor". Horror-Movies.ca gave the film a largely negative review stating that "nothing happens for a VERY long time, other than the old tried, tested, overdone and predictable jump scenes, and for a film that is over 100mins long, that isn’t good."

The Woman in Black

The Woman in Black is an upcoming 2012 horror-thriller film directed by James Watkins and written by Jane Goldman, and is based on Susan Hill's novel of the same name. It is produced by Hammer Film Productions. The film will star Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer, Sophie Stuckey, and Liz White. It is due to release in the U.S. and Canada on 3 February 2012 and in UK cinemas on 10 February 2012.

Premise

Young lawyer Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) leaves his son in London to settle the legal affairs of the recently deceased Alice Drablow. He discovers that a series of inexplicable accidents and suicides have forced the parents of her village to barricade their children indoors, as if protecting them from an unseen foe. When Arthur stays the night all alone at the Drablows' foreboding house, he hears the screams of a drowning child and sees decaying children listlessly wandering the marshes. He will soon discover these haunting figures share the same date of death, and the same killer.

The Woman in Black is the ghost of a scorned woman who was unable to save Nathaniel, her beloved son, from drowning. She now takes on a horrifying form. Set on vengeance, her veil hides gaping sockets eaten away by scavengers and her curse hides an even darker secret - whenever she is seen, a child dies.

In the face of hostility from the local residents, Arthur dredges up Nathaniel’s skeleton and buries it with his mother, hoping the evil spectre will finally rest in peace. In a cruel twist of fate, the Woman In Black turns her claws towards Arthur’s young son. To avoid a fate worse than death, Arthur must now sacrifice everything he holds dear and save his child.

Production

Development

The film was announced in 2009, with Jane Goldman as screenwriter and later James Watkins as director.

Daniel Radcliffe was announced as the actor playing the part of Arthur Kipps on 19 July 2010. He was quoted as saying,"I am incredibly excited to be part of The Woman in Black. Jane Goldman's script is beautifully written — both tender and terrifying in equal measure." Two months later, it was announced that fellow Harry Potter co-star Ciarán Hinds would join Radcliffe along with Janet McTeer as Mr and Mrs Daily, respectively. Before filming, Radcliffe saw a psychologist so he could better understand his character.

Filming

The film was planned to be shot in 3D, but that plan was later scrapped. Principal photography officially started on 26 September 2010. The next day, Radcliffe was pictured in costume just outside Peterborough, England. In early October the crew was filming in Layer Marney Tower. Filming officially ended on 4 December 2010.

Post-production

At the Kapow! Comic Con in London during April 2011, director James Watkins confirmed filming had been completed in December 2010 and post production would go on until June 2011.

Marketing

On 10 April 2011, during the Kapow! Comic Con in London, the first official teaser trailer was unveiled. Another trailer of the film was attached to some showings of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in July 2011, and a brand new worldwide teaser, depicting more footage from the movie, was released on 17 August 2011. The official UK teaser poster was released on 24 August 2011. The full UK trailer was released on 14 October 2011. CBS Films released a one minute teaser at Spike TV's Scream Awards on 18 October 2011, and a day later released a teaser poster. On 11 January 2012, Momentum Pictures released the official theatrical poster, while on 12 January, MTV released a minute clip of the film.

Underworld: Awakening

Underworld: Awakening (also known as Underworld 4) is an upcoming American 3D action horror film film set to be released on January 20, 2012. Underworld: Awakening is the second sequel in the Underworld series (with Rise of the Lycans being the prequel to the first film Underworld and Evolution being the first sequel). Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein are directing the film with a screenplay by Len Wiseman, John Hlavin, and Allison Burnett.
